Did you know that used tea leaves can be reused for natural dyeing?
Experience a unique collaboration between Japanese tea tasting and Kusaki-zome (natural dyeing) in this workshop at the same time.
In co-operation with YurikaSaito, who holds natural dyeing workshops in Berlin, you'll enjoy a tea tasting and learn how to dye your own fabric using tea leaves. The tannins in tea leaves react with iron to create rich colours that set on fabric.
Come and experience the combination of tea and natural dyeing! You can also buy your favourite tea on the day.

What Kusaki-zome?
Kusaki-zome, or natural dyeing, is a traditional Japanese technique that uses seasonal plants to create beautiful colors. It has been widely used for kimono, farmers’ workwear, furoshiki (wrapping cloths), and ritual items for Shinto ceremonies. One popular technique is shibori (tie-dye), where fabric is tied, folded, or clamped to create unique patterns. By dyeing with natural materials, you can make your own original designs while also embracing recycling and sustainability in daily life.

What you will need

  • Please come with an apron or wear not fancy clothes as the tea solution may splash.

Nice to have

  • A plastic bag to put the wet cloth in, as you will be asked to take the wet tote bag home after dyeing (we will also prepare for the plastic bag as well).
  • Used tea leaves or unused tea leave which has already been expired. We will use the tea leaves to dye cloths. If you bring some of those, we will provide you with a 10% off voucher to purchase teas.
  • Your own cloths (e.g. handkerchiefs weighing less than 20 g, excluding synthetic fibres)

What participants will gain

  • Learn about and experience traditional Kusaki-zome natural dyeing
  • Learn how to make traditional Shi-bori-zome tie-dye patterns
  • Upcycle dyeing your own fabrics
  • Experience premium Japanese tea tasting (award winning teas)
  • A tote bag which you have dyed during the workshop
